Course Description:
"If one is drowning and wishes to rescue someone else who is drowning, that is impossible... If one is not drowning and wishes to rescue someone else who is drowning, that is certainly possible."
The Buddha wisely advocates a path that is not self-sacrificing, stating that it is better to help yourself and not help others than to help others and not yourself. In this 4-week course, we will examine how Buddhist teachings encourage us to consider our own needs as well as our internal and external support systems. The course will be experiential and body-based, and we’ll be doing sits and some reflections that open up the topic.
Using meditation, reflection, and inquiry, we’ll explore the following areas:
The distinction between self-care and selfishness
False views and refuges that can feed self-sacrifice
Self-compassion as a path to deepening understanding of others' suffering
Placing ourselves at the center of the journey whilst holding the self as fundamentally empty
This course is recommended for those with some experience in spiritual practice.
