Coming Together in Compassionate Community

Tuesday, November 19th, 2024
8:00 - 10:00 pm EST
Led By: Viveka and Vimalasara

Online via Zoom

Event Description:

In light of the recent USA presidential election and ongoing conflicts and tragedies in Gaza, the West Bank, Israel, Lebanon, Ukraine, Russia, and Sudan, many of us are feeling a profound sense of distress and concern.

As practitioners of the Dharma during these turbulent times, it is essential to heed the Buddha's teachings on the three poisons of the world: greed, hatred, and delusion. Additionally, we can reflect on the insights of Martin Luther King, who spoke of militarism, racism, and poverty as modern manifestations of these same poisons. The violent rhetoric we witness today is a direct result of these harmful elements at play.

Viveka and Vimalasara warmly invite you to come together with us on Tuesday, November 19th, from 8pm to 10pm EST. This gathering will provide a space for us to share our heartbreak and to explore what skillful actions might look like as we nurture our sangha, especially given that many of our members come from communities that are experiencing significant turmoil. We hope you can join us.

About the Leaders:

Viveka is the President of the Triratna NY-NJ sangha. Her teaching emphasizes awakening here and now — grounded in the body and accessed through a spacious, appreciative curiosity. Her teaching style is informed by over 20 years of dharma practice and long silent retreats, interaction with a diversity of Buddhist teachers and practitioners, and her work as a certified coach, facilitator, and trainer supporting people in social change movements to realize lasting transformation. She lives in San Francisco, California.

Vimalasara is a TEDx speaker and author of 8 books, including Detox Your Heart, Meditations for Emotional Trauma, and her award-winning books Eight Step Recovery – Using The Buddha’s Teachings to Overcome Addiction and her novel Borrowed Body. She is a senior teacher in the Triratna Buddhist Order, chair of Vancouver Buddhist Centre, President of the Buddhist Recovery Network, and one of the organizers of the GENX Buddhist Teacher’s gathering in 2019. She is a co-founder of Mindfulness-Based Addiction Recovery MBAR and trained as a telephone counselor for Night Line UK. She lives in Canada, tours internationally as a public speaker, and is one of the new leading African Descent voices in the field of Mindfulness Approaches for Addictive Behaviors.
